There are two basic stitches in knitting, knit and purl. All stitch patterns are based on one or both of these stitches, combined in some way. The knit stitch is the easier of the two. Practise this until you can work it smoothly

Using the needle in your right hand, push your needle through the front of the first stitch on the left hand needle.

Pull the wool around the needle in your right hand from the back of the needle to the front.

Using the needle in your right hand, pull the loop through to the front of the work.

You should now have a new stitch on the needle in your right hand. Now you just repeat each of the steps from one to four for each stitch until you have completed the row.

Slip the stitch off the needle in your left hand.

When you are finished your knitting should look something like this
